Numeracy Explained

At Denton West End, we have made some important decisions about the way we teach calculation. In this part of our website, we would like to share this guidance with you so that you can support your child with their mathematical understanding.

Please use the menu to the right to navigate this section of the website.

Each section is organised into stages which show the progression in learning. We have not specified a corresponding year group or age for each stage as the method your child is using will depend upon their mathematical ability. However, as a broad guideline, most children working in KS1(Years 1 and 2) will be developing an understanding of the operation and developing mental strategies and most pupils in KS2 (Years 3 to 6) will be continuing to develop mental strategies alongside developing the use of written methods.

We hope that by providing you with detailed information about the methods we are currently using in the classroom, it will enable you to feel confident in providing extra support at home with homework.

A big thank-you to the children who helped with these videos and also to Mrs Sutlow and Mr Cole for putting this part of the website together.

Finally, if you have any comments or queries about this section of our website, please contact your child’s class teacher who will be happy to assist you.
