Division - Early Experiences
Pupils are given the opportunity to use developing mathematical ideas and methods to solve practical problems in a real or role-play context. For example,
Dividing velcro food in the ‘home’ role-play area.
- Arranging pupils in groups for different learning groups and activities.
- Making sandwiches for tea party and dividing them into 4 squares.

Develop and support understanding through images such as:
Y1- There are 40 straws in a box. There are 4 colours of straws. There is the same number of each colour. How many of each colour are there in a box?
Y2- There are 30 children going on a trip. The children need to go 6 in each car. How many cars do you need?
Y3- If you put 25 eggs in boxes of 6 how many boxes would you fill? How many eggs would be left over?
Division vocabulary includes; count on, count back, groups of, count in…2s, 5s, 10s…, divided into equal groups of… group in pairs, chunking, grouping, divided by, sharing, repeated subtraction, remainder, left over, array, row column.
